For much of the 1980s, sci-fi was a dominate genre in film and television. Titles like ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Star Trek’ were wildly successful throughout that period but they were not beyond parodying.
The 1987 comedy film ‘Spaceballs’ sought to skewer the sci-fi obsession of the era and it went on to be a cult classic. One of its stars – Tim Russ – actually went on to feature in ‘Star Trek: Voyager’.
Now, nearly 40 years on from the release of ‘Spaceballs’, Amazon MGM Studios has announced that a sequel is officially in the works.
‘Spaceballs 2′ is set for release in 2027 and features a number of stars from the original title. Mel Brooks will return to play the role of Yogurt and will also be one of the producers. Brooks, who turns 99 later this month, wrote on Bluesky: “I told you we’d be back.”

Other returning actors include Bill Pullman as Lone Star, Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet and Daphne Zuniga as Queen Vespa.
Fans will also be eager to know whether Russ will also be involved with the upcoming release. The actor hasn’t officially confirmed whether he is taking part, but he did leave a message for fans, saying: ” I may be ….. combing the desert again…!!!”
Russ was hinting at one of the most iconic scenes in the film, when a group of hapless officials use a comedy oversized comb to search for a lost princess in a desert.
Alongside Brooks producing, Josh Gad is enlisted as a co-writer on the project. Writing on Instagram, Gad revealed that Spaceballs had been a defining moment in his movie-watching life.
“I was that child who saw Spaceballs before I ever saw Star Wars and then wondered why anyone would do a dramatic remake of the Mel Brooks classic,” Gad said. “It is therefore the greatest gift of my life to now help take the reins and work alongside Mel and this incredible group to do a sequel to the movie that first inspired George Lucas.”
