Texas AG Paxton says cereal companies have to advertise their products in a non-deceptive way

Texas GOP Attorney General Ken Paxton on Thursday said that cereal companies have to advertise their products in a non-deceptive way.

“Many of the cereal makers are advertising cereals as healthy for children, but aren’t disclosing the chemicals and also the high sugar content and the damaging effect of those products,” Paxton said on the “Just the News, No Noise” TV show.

Earlier this week, Paxton announced that his office was taking part in an investigation against General Mills, Inc. for illegal misrepresentation of its food products as “healthy.”

General Mills owns a variety of cereal brands, including Lucky Charms and Cinnamon Toast Crunch. 

Paxton said in a press release that while General Mills says it sells “healthy” cereals, there are many petroleum-based food colorings in the products. 

“We just want them to advertise in a non-deceptive way, and they haven’t done that,” he said. “So that’s why we’re pursuing them.”
