A federal appeals court ruled on Friday that President Donald Trump cannot use emergency powers granted by Congress to impose tariffs. However, the ruling won’t take effect until mid-October, giving the administration time to appeal to the Supreme Court.
The 7-4 ruling could result in the administration having to repay billions of dollars worth of duties, according to Politico. The ruling could affect deals the Trump administration has struck with the European Union, Japan, South Korea among the major trading partners.
