The House Judiciary Committee will hold a field hearing later this month on the slaying of a Ukrainian refugee in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Iryna Zarutska was fatally stabbed on the city’s light rail train last month. Zarutska, who was 23-years-old, was stabbed three times, including once in the neck and was pronounced dead on the scene. The suspect has been identified as 34-year-old Decarlos Brown, who was arrested shortly after the alleged killing and charged with first-degree murder.
The hearing is scheduled to take place on Sept. 29, according to Fox News, and will be led by the House Judiciary’s subcommittee on oversight. New Jersey Republican Rep. Jeff Van Drew confirmed the hearing, claiming the killing was preventable and Americans deserve accountability.
“[Zarutska’s death was the] culmination of years of failed liberal policies that put criminals ahead of victims,” he told the outlet. “This was entirely preventable, and we owe it to the people to fix it before another innocent life is lost.”
The Justice Department has charged Brown with one count of committing an act causing death on a mass transportation system, and the man, who reportedly has schizophrenia, had been arrested at least 13 times before the fatal stabbing.
It was not immediately clear where the hearing will take place or the time of the hearing.
