Trump teases holding a Republican midterms convention next year

President Donald Trump on Tuesday afternoon teased a first ever Republican convention for the 2026 midterms, which he touted would be to celebrate the party’s accomplishments since the general election last year.

Both major political parties hold national conventions during presidential elections every four years, but do not hold midterm conventions, which would focus on congressional and statewide elections. The entire House is elected every two years, along with one third of the Senate.

Republicans are hoping to retain control of both chambers and increase their narrow majorities. Republicans control the House by a margin of 219-213 and the Senate 53-45. Two senators are also considered independents but vote with the Democrats.

Trump did not state when the convention would be or where it would take place, but promised it would be “quite the event.”

“The Republicans are going to do a Midterm Convention in order to show the great things we have done since the Presidential Election of 2024,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Time and place to be determined. Stay tuned, it will be quite the Event, and very exciting!”

The 2024 Republican convention took place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Republicans are also hoping to extend their majority in the House by creating new districts or flipping control of districts in recently redrawn congressional maps in multiple GOP-led states like Texas and Missouri. California, however, is trying to offset gains in Texas by redrawing its congressional map to add or flip five Republican districts.

The Democratic Party is also considering hosting its own convention next year, according to Axios.
