Dodgers pitcher juggles self-inflicted wound during harsh start

The Los Angeles Dodgers are off to an encouraging start this season, sitting at 29-18 overall and first in the National League West. Two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani is once again playing like an MVP candidate, and he hasn’t even made his pitching debut this season. 

The Dodgers are looking to be the first team since the New York Yankees, who won in 1998, 1999, and 2000, to repeat as World Series champions. While the franchise is on a sound track to do so, it was surprisingly just swept in the Freeway Series by the Los Angeles Angels. The starting pitching struggled significantly in all three games, including former All-Star Tony Gonsolin.

The 31-year-old had gotten off to a positive start in 2025, but on Sunday gave up four runs in four innings pitched. However, Sonja Chen, an MLB.com reporter for the Los Angeles Dodgers, revealed how the Angels’ three-run first inning all happened when Gonsolin was dealing with a potential injury during the game.

According to Chen, a trainer checked on the Dodgers’ starter, who was dealing with what seemed to be a fingernail issue that caused bleeding. Gonsolin subsequently stayed in the game despite the concerning sight. 

Overall, Gonsolin downplayed the severity of this ailment in his postgame interview, noting that it had nothing to do with his poor start. The sixth-year pro is vital to the Dodgers’ rotation and is trying to regain his All-Star form from 2022. Now that he is seemingly fully healthy, Gonsolin is starting to show those signs.
