An original member of punk rock band the Vandals since 1989, John Freese has also manned the drummers stool for the likes of Devo and also had spells wite the likes of Guns N’ Roses and A Perfect Circle.
As a session drummer, Freese has appeared on over 400 albums since and performed live with a diverse range of artists artists including the likes of Nine Inch Nails, Weezer, Sublime, Sting, the Offspring and Danny Elfman.
Back in May 2023, the Florida native was recruited by Foo Fighters, as a replacement for Taylor Hawkins (who passed away in March 2022) and also appeared on their latest studio album, 2023’s But Here We Are.
Foo’s exit
The drummer posted a message on his Instagram confirming that he would no longer be drumming with Foo Fighters.
The Foo Fighters called me Monday night to let me know they’ve decided “to go in a different direction with their drummer.” No reason was given. : ( Regardless, I enjoyed the past two years with them, both on and off stage, and I support whatever they feel is best for the band. In my 40 years of drumming professionally, I’ve never been let go from a band, so while I’m not angry—just a bit shocked and disappointed. But as most of you know I’ve always worked freelance and bounced between bands so, I’m fine. Stay tuned for my “Top 10 possible reasons Josh got booted from the Foo Fighters” list.
Many high profile artists replied to the post including Michael Buble and Police drummer Stewart Copeland who wished the drummer well. Comedian Tim Heidecker was on hand with a quip, claiming: “Upside is you won’t have to hear any of those horrible songs ever again”!
