The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Monday confirmed that it has completed its first chartered flight for illegal migrants who agreed to self-deport in exchange for $1,000.Ā

President Donald Trump signed an executive order earlier this month that formally established the federal program, which also gave undocumented migrants free flights out of the country. The program is part of the Trump administration’s efforts to curb illegal immigration and deport people already in the U.S. illegally.

The department said the flight carried 64 Colombian and Honduran migrants back to their home countries.Ā

ā€œAll participants were offered the same benefits as any illegal alien who self-deports using the CBP Home App,” DHS said in a news release. “They received travel assistance, a $1,000 stipend, and preserved the possibility they could one day return to the United States legally.ā€Ā

The program allows migrants to apply for self-deportation through the Customs and Border Patrol app, and gives the migrants three weeks to finalize their affairs before leaving the country.Ā

ā€œIf you are here illegally, use the CBP Home App to take control ofĀ yourĀ departure and receiveĀ financialĀ support toĀ return home,” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in a statement. “If youĀ don’t, you will beĀ subjected to fines, arrest, deportation and will neverĀ be allowed to return.”
