Injuries happen to everyone — even the greats.

That’s been the reality that former MVP Justin Verlander has been faced with of late, dealing with his body slowly breaking down while still trying to perform at an elite level.

The Giants placed placing Verlander on the 15-day injured list with a pectoral nerve issue Wednesday afternoon.

Verlander landing on the IL comes retroactive to May 18 where Verlander labored through a start and ultimately left injured.

“There are always things you’re pushing through,” he said when asked about how he felt during that start. “It’s always difficult to be 100 percent in this game. It was one of those things where I thought I was going to be just fine. Then I go out there and start throwing, look up (at the scoreboard) after the first pitch and see 90-91, and I thought, ‘Oh, boy. Gonna be a tough day.’”

The injury isn’t supposed to be serious, with Verlander saying that he needed a few days post game to decide if he’d be ready for his next start.

“That’s the problem, not being able to say 100 percent (that he could return after skipping just one start),” he said. “I need a few more days to determine that, and the retroactive date for the IL is today.”

Kyle Harrison and Jordan Hicks (who was recently moved to the bullpen due to poor performance) are the team’s likely replacements in house.
