The House Rules Committee on Wednesday night officially sent the Republican-led reconciliation package to the House floor, setting it up for a critical vote sometime Thursday.
The package, which includes funding for many of President Donald Trump’s campaign promises, passed in an 8-4 vote.
The passage marks a significant step in a tumultuous week for House Republican leadership. GOP leaders were forced to make deals with blue state Republican lawmakers on raising the SALT deduction cap. The agreement prompted backlash from fiscal conservatives who perceived the deal as a subsidy for high-tax states.
House Republicans released an updated version of the package late Wednesday, which included the SALT deal and expediting the start date of Medicaid work requirements from Jan. 1, 2029, to Dec. 31, 2026.
The step also comes after House Republicans met with Trump multiple times this week, who emphasized the need for the legislation. Trump first met with the lawmakers on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, then some members of the caucus met with the president again on Wednesday at the White House.
The legislation will now need to pass in a full floor vote, and is expected to face unified opposition from House Democrats.
