The New York Yankees, led by Aaron Judge, look like American League contenders again. However, they could use some upgrades at the trade deadline to solidify their roster.
The Yankees’ third base situation already was not the best, but Oswaldo Cabrera’s injury really creates a hole in the lineup. If the Yankees are going to make a trade, it should be for a third baseman. The Yankees’ top prospect, George Lombard Jr., could be the team’s starting third baseman as soon as next year. However, ClutchPoints’ Garrett Kerman proposed this trade that would dump Lombard in favor of Toronto Blue Jays All-Star Bo Bichette:
- Yankees receive: Bo BichetteÂ
- Blue Jays receive: George Lombard Jr., Spencer Jones and Ben Hess
While Bichette is a two-time All-Star and has led the American League in hits twice, trading three top 10 prospects for a player on an expiring deal is a massive overpay. Additionally, Bichette would have to switch positions to even fill the Yankees’ need at third base.
Lombard is the Yankees’ top prospect, Jones is their No.2 prospect and Hess is their No.3 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. Bichette is slashing .288/.335/.420. His power numbers are down and will likely demand a contract that makes him among the highest-paid shortstops in baseball.

Not only would the Yankees be losing three promising prospects to a division rival. They could lose Bichette as well after the season. This trade package would certainly be a blockbuster move, but it would leave the Yankees in a bad spot for the future.
