The New York Yankees’ pitching staff took another hit as a star reliever will be sidelined for multiple weeks.

Major League Baseball insider Jeff Passan reported that Yankees’ closer Luke Weaver injured his hamstring while warming up and will be placed on the IL.

“New York Yankees closer Luke Weaver is expected to be placed on the injured list after injuring his hamstring warming up Sunday night, sources tell ESPN,” Passan reported on X. “Weaver underwent an MRI and could miss four to six weeks, though the official timetable will be determined Tuesday.”

The hope for Yankees’ manager Aaron Boone is that Weaver’s injury isn’t too serious.

“He felt something when he had finished warming up, and then when he went to stretch, he felt something in the middle of his hammy,” Boone said. “So we had to make a switch on the fly there. We’re hoping it’s not too serious.”

However, all signs point to Weaver missing multiple weeks, which could force the Yankees to make a move to add a reliever.

Weaver had replaced Devin Williams as the Yankees’ closer and had been dominant. In the closer’s role, Weaver is 1-1 with a 1.05 ERA and is 8-for-9 on save opportunities. Last season, Weaver was a key part of the Yankees’ bullpen and a big reason why New York made the World Series, as he went 7-3 with a 2.89 ERA in 62 games.

Weaver is earning $2.5 million this season as New York picked up his club option. He will be a free agent at the end of this season.
