It was a fly ball that any MLB outfielder will say they should catch.
That doesn’t mean it was easy, but it does make it a disappointment. New York Mets veteran Brandon Nimmo had a chance to make a play and extend Tuesday night’s game with the Dodgers in extra innings, but instead he misplayed what turned into a walk-off win.
The play occurred with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning of a 5-5 game. The Dodgers had runners on first and second, and Freddie Freeman was at the plate.
Freeman lofted a fly ball the other way, deep to left field. It was hit well, but not well enough to leave the yard or even quite reach the wall.
Nimmo ran back, but the left fielder had broken toward the gap. As the ball traveled, it faded toward the foul pole.
The former centerfielder tried to torque his body around in the other direction, but it was too late. The ball beat him there and hit the ground.
Back on the bases, the Dodgers’ runner on second raced home, and the game was over.

Nimmo was playing deep on the play specifically to catch a hit like this one, but it didn’t work out.
The inning wouldn’t have been over, and the runner may have tagged up to advance to third base. The Dodgers still could’ve won in the 10th inning.
But baseball is a funny game, and maybe if Nimmo made this catch, the Mets and Dodgers would’ve played another dozen innings.
It’s just one game in early June, and it won’t destroy the Mets’ season or anything like that. But it’s a bummer of an ending on a night where the game was still there for the taking.
