Red Sox call up top MLB prospect Roman Anthony ahead of series vs. Rays

Roman’s time has finally arrived in Boston.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports the Red Sox are calling up top prospect Roman Anthony ahead of Monday’s home game against the Rays. Anthony is an outfielder who has been tearing up the minors, and could become the next big star in Boston if he works out.

In order to make room for Anthony, Boston put outfielder Wilyer Abreu on the injured list, per Ken Rosenthal.

Red Sox fans have been screaming for the team to call up Anthony, and the team now obliges after Boston won a series vs. the Yankees over the weekend. Anthony, along with Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell, should form the core of the next contending Red Sox team.

Roman Anthony is just 21 years old, making him one of the youngest players in baseball.

Anthony was a second-round pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, as the Red Sox took him out of high school with the 79th overall pick. Still, Anthony was considered to be a better prospect than that, as MLB.com had him ranked 56th overall in their draft prospect rankings.

Boston received the 79th overall pick as compensation when Eduardo Rodriguez signed with the Detroit Tigers the previous offseason.

Anthony is considered the best prospect in baseball, largely due to his high offensive ceiling.

He has power, patience and speed, offering the potential to be a true five-tool player at the major league level while playing above-average defense in the outfield. Over the weekend, Anthony crushed a grand slam 497 feet while playing in AAA.

Anthony will take a spot in Boston’s outfield, which is already crowded with talent. He can play any of the three outfield positions but will probably slot in at left field, with the ability to play center field or right field if necessary. 

With Wilyer Abreu on the injured list, Anthony may get more time in right field initially, with Jarren Duran in left and Ceddane Rafaela in center.
