Sydney Sweeney is set to play the role of the trailblazing boxer Christy Martin in an upcoming and, as yet untitled biopic with Sweeney committed heavily to the role.
The biopic is set to chronicle Martin’s remarkable rise in professional boxing in the 1990s, where she became known as “The Coal Miner’s Daughter” and was a pioneer for women in the sport. It is also expected delve into her turbulent personal life, including her struggles with substance abuse and the attempted murder by her husband/trainer, James Martin, in 2010.
The film (which has yet to have a confirmed release date) is directed by David Michôd with Ben Foster cast as James Martin, and Katy O’Brian set to play Martin’s boxing rival, Lisa Holewyne.
Rigorous training
Speaking to W Magazine, Sweeny discussed the months of rigorous training, including boxing, kickboxing, and weight training multiple times a day.
The 27-year-old stated: “Once I started training, I had about three and a half months of it and I loved it. I weight trained in the morning for an hour, kick boxed midday for about two hours, and then weight train again at night for an hour every day. I gained a little over 30 pounds.
My hair in the movie is really fun, because you go from the 80s to early 2000s so her hair really changes as she grows up. And you see the different time periods, which I always have such a blast with. When I get to change my look, it’s really exciting for me. So I have brown contacts in because she had brown eyes, different hair, my body was just completely different. And I didn’t fit in any of my clothes. I’m usually, like, a size 23 and I was wearing like a size 27“.
