Universal Pictures and Death Row Pictures are developing a definitive biographical film about the life and career of Snoop Dogg (Calvin Broadus Jr). The Compton born rapper himself is heavily involved in the project as guest producer with the biopic being produced by Craig Brewer who is well known for directing films like Hustle & Flow, Dolemite Is My Name, and Coming 2 America.

Actor Jonathan Daviss, best known for his role as Pope Heyward in the Netflix series Outer Banks, has been cast to portray Snoop. The veteran rapper himself has publicly endorsed this casting, showing his approval on social media.

Snoop biopic premise

The film will chronicle Snoop Dogg’s journey from his early life as a young Calvin Broadus Jr. through to his getting involved with the West Coast hip-hop scene, his rise to fame with Death Row Records, his iconic debut album Doggystyle with Dr. Dre, and his evolution into a global entertainment icon who has branched into various ventures, including television appearances (like The Voice and the Olympics coverage), business, and even cooking shows.

This biopic is the first feature film under Death Row Pictures’ new multi-year overall deal with NBC Universal Entertainment & Studios, signaling a move for the historic hip-hop label into broader film and television storytelling.

As of now, there is no official release date for the film, as it’s still in the development and pre-production phases following the recent announcements of the director and lead actor.
