Yankees named most likely destination for Marlins hard-throwing pitcher

The New York Yankees are currently 42-29 and hold a two-and-a-half game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays for first place in the American League East.

The offense, headlined by two-time AL Most Valuable Player Aaron Judge, is one of the best in baseball. New York’s run differential is second-best in Major League Baseball (+102).

Left-hander Max Fried has been incredible this season and lefty Carlos Rodon is having an All-Star caliber season.

Besides Fried and Rodon, the starting rotation is missing some flare without Luis Gil. Gil hasn’t pitched in 2025 due to a right lat strain.

Gil’s return isn’t expected to return until after the All-Star break, so addressing his absence before the trade deadline will be crucial for the Yankees.

Sports Illustrated’s Matthew Schmidt listed the four most likely destinations for Miami Marlins starting pitcher Edward Cabrera and the Yankees made the list.

Cabrera, 27, is 2-2 with a 4.10 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP in 11 starts this season. After a rough April, Cabrera has settled in nicely. Since May 1, Cabrera is 2-1 with a 2.38 ERA and 38 strikeouts in seven starts.

“The question is whether or not general manager Brian Cashman, who is notoriously stingy with prospects, would be willing to surrender what the Marlins would want in a deal,” wrote Schmidt.

A trade for Cabrera could cement New York’s postseason chances and a return to the Fall Classic.
