The St. Louis Cardinals may be coming back down to earth a little bit. They were red-hot in the month of May, but have only won one series thus far in the month of June.

At 38-35, they are seven games out in the National League Central and tied for third place with the Cincinnati Reds.

If they continue to slide, it is very likely that they will be sellers at the trade deadline, meaning certain veterans could be shipped out.

They tried to trade Nolan Arenado last offseason, but to no avail. Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report listed the Los Angeles Dodgers as a dream destination for Arenado, however.

“Arenado joining the Dodgers would allow the rest of us to move on while presumably permitting him to be very happy. The Southern California native has been linked to the Dodgers for what feels like forever, and they would make a nice final stop on what has been a terrific career,” Rymer wrote.

The Cardinals and Dodgers were in trade talks for Arenado back in July of 2023. St. Louis was out of contention and the Dodgers were showing interest.

No deal materialized, however, and Arenado remained in St. Louis. The Cardinals were close to sending him to the Houston Astros before he used his no-trade clause to block the deal.

Trading Arenado would open up third base for Nolan Gorman or possibly even prospect Thomas Saggese. It would allow St. Louis to get on with their plans of a “reset” and give runway to younger players.

Arenado’s contract isn’t up until after the 2027 season, but he likely won’t remain in St. Louis past 2027, and going to Los Angeles would give him a chance to compete for a World Series title in the latter stages of his career.

We’ll see if anything materializes at the trade deadline this year.
