The New York Knicks will likely aim to bolster their depth throughout free agency. A weakness of their’s last season, the team could target one of the NBA’s better backup point guards starting on Monday.
SNY’s Ian Begley recently reported that the Knicks could be suitors for Jones’ services, citing the interest that existed last year as well.
“Tyus Jones is a name that I’m keeping an eye on,” Begley said. “Last summer, there was mutual interest between the Knicks and Jones, and Jones was even willing to take a pay cut to come to New York. He ended up choosing Phoenix thinking it would be a very good situation for him, it didn’t work out.
New York has the $5.7 million taxpayer and the league minimum contracts to work with in free agency, which could be enough to land Jones if he’s still willing to take a pay cut.
Jones has been one of the league’s premier backup point guards for quite some time. Last season with Phoenix, he averaged 10.2 points and 5.3 assists per game. Jones first broke out onto the scene in 2022 with the Memphis Grizzlies, earning votes for Sixth Man of the Year in both 2022 and 2023.
The Knicks are in need of guard depth ahead of next season. Outside of Miles McBride, the Knicks struggled to find consistent bench production all season.
