Christian Koss nearly tied Monday’s game with one swing of the bat for the Giants until an unusual circumstance prevented him from doing so.
The San Francisco infielder launched a ball into left field with his team down 3-2 in Arizona, sending left fielder Tim Tawa to the wall.
But when Tawa got there, a fan reached out with his glove over the wall to catch the ball, preventing Koss’s drive from potentially becoming a home run. After the umpires initially called Koss out, a challenge resulted in him getting a double instead.

Diamondbacks fan interference prevents potential Christian Koss HR
San Francisco (45-39) was in Arizona on Monday night for a matchup against the Diamondbacks. Trailing 3-2 in the top of the eighth inning, Koss came to the plate needing to ignite his team to make a comeback.
He put the right swing together to do just that. The ball he hit had just enough carry to get to the wall in left-center field, where Tawa was backtracking and made a leaping attempt at catching it.
Instead, a fan wearing a Diamondbacks hat and shirt fully extended out into the field of play, putting his own glove right above Tawa’s to take the ball away. After the umpires came together, they initially called Koss out.

The ball appeared to have the trajectory to barely have been a home run, which would have tied the game. Bob Melvin challenged the umpires’ out call, which resulted in Koss being awarded a double instead, as the umpires ruled that it would not have been a home run without the interference.
The fan who reached out and interfered was ejected, and the Giants wound up not scoring in the inning and losing 4-2 after Eugenio Suarez clubbed a homer in the bottom of the eight to tack on an insurance run for Arizona.
