Planned Parenthood on Monday made good on its promise to sue the Trump administration over provisions in the “One Big Beautiful Bill” that cuts funding for Medicaid and could result in significant closures of its centers.
The group threatened to sue the administration last week after President Donald Trump signed the controversial megabill. The provisions contained in the bill prohibit abortion providers from receiving Medicaid funding for up to one year for any other reproductive health services they may provide.
Planned Parenthood filed the lawsuit in the U.S. District Court inĀ Massachusetts, arguing that the new law unconstitutionally prohibits patients from using Medicaid as their insurance at any of its facilities.
āThe prohibition specifically targets Planned Parenthood Federation of America and its member health care providers in order to punish them for lawful activity, namely advocating for and providing legal abortion access wholly outside the Medicaid program and without using any federal funds,ā the organization wrote in the complaint, per The Hill.Ā
“The Defund Provision is a naked attempt to leverage the governmentās spending power to attack and penalize Planned Parenthood and impermissibly single it out for unfavorable treatment,ā the complaint added.
The lawsuit comes after the group claimed last week that the order puts nearly 200 centers across 24 states at risk of closure and that 90 percent of those closures would occur in states where abortion is still legal.Ā
The legislation and lawsuit also come after the Supreme Court paved the way last week for individual states to restrict Medicaid funding to Planned Parenthood.
