The New York Mets are performing well and even have the second-best record in the National League at 27-15. They lead the NL East by 2 1/2 games over the Philadelphia Phillies.

The trade deadline is months out, but the Mets could always look to find ways to improve their roster and prepare for a run down the stretch. They’ll want to build off of their surprise run to the NLCS last October.

The Boston Red Sox may have an unhappy camper on their hands in Rafael Devers, who is unwilling to move to first base.

Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report lists New York is a possible, but unlikely destination.

“If Pete Alonso opts out and actually leaves Queens this offseason, the Mets instantly become a much more serious suitor for a top-tier corner infielder. But re-upping with the Polar Bear feels more likely than trading for Devers,” Miller writes.

The Mets signed Alonso to a two-year contract that includes an opt-out clause. Chances are he may opt out, which could open the door for a Devers trade at some point.

In the event that both things happen, New York could then shift Mark Vientos to first base in 2026. But if they go for Devers now, they could have a truly scary lineup for the rest of 2025.

A move such as this would only further solidify the Mets as serious World Series contenders.

Despite the drama in Boston, Devers is slashing .285/.407/.494 with seven home runs, 31 RBI and a .901 OPS. Citi Field is a hitter friendly environment as well, so he could certainly fit right in with the Mets later this year if they trade for him.

Ultimately, everything depends on if Devers requests a trade out of Boston.
