The world’s largest movie theater chain, AMC Theatres, says cinema-goers in America will be able to get half-price tickets every Wednesday, starting this summer.

In a press release this week, AMC announced “50% Off Wednesdays”, an initiative which will be brought in at all of the company’s theaters in the United States.

When will “50% Off Wednesdays” start?

“50% Off Wednesdays” is scheduled to launch on July 9, AMC said. The chain did not specify whether the initiative is temporary or permanent in nature.

Do I need to be a member to get half-price AMC tickets?

Yes. To qualify for the 50% discount, which will be applied to the chain’s base adult ticket price, customers must sign up to the AMC Stubs rewards program, whose basic tier is free to join.

“Certain movies and holiday time periods” may not be included in the promotion, AMC says, while the discount will not apply to supplementary charges for special formats such as IMAX.

“50% Off Wednesdays” will join AMC’s existing initiative “Discount Tuesdays”, which also offers major price reductions to AMC Stubs members.

Box office “booming”, says AMC chief

In recent years, movie theaters have faced a number of major challenges, including those posed by the covid-19 pandemic, the Hollywood strikes, and the competition brought by the rise of streaming platforms.

But AMC’s chairman and CEO, Adam Aron, said box-office figures are now “booming”, despite a first-quarter slump he has branded an “anomaly”.

This positive trend has allowed the chain to implement its new discount scheme, he explained in a statement.

“At AMC, we’ve gone to great lengths to create the preeminent moviegoing environment at our AMC theatres including our offering more comfortable seating, more premium formats, and better food and beverage offerings,” Aron said.

“Now, we also are pleased to make moviegoing more affordable, with our new ‘50% Off Wednesdays’ effort.

“Realistically, we could not afford to have made this change to our ticket pricing strategy until the box office showed true signs of sustained recovery.

“But in April and now in May, the box office has been booming, and the remainder of 2025 appears poised to continue that upward box office trend.”

In a recent earnings call, Aron declared that the U.S. box office is now “running at double last year’s demand”.

How many movie theaters does AMC have in the U.S.?

AMC says it has over 10,000 screens at around 900 locations worldwide, with approximately 600 theaters in the U.S.
