Arnold Schwarzenegger, one of Hollywood’s biggest legends and the face of some of the most iconic action films of the 1980s and 1990s, is clear about one thing: he’s not the craziest person in Hollywood. The seven-time Mr. Olympia has worked relentlessly since his early days, achieving the impossible in the so-called Mecca of Cinema thanks to his life philosophy and work ethic, something he has demonstrated time and again. Yet, according to the actor himself, there’s someone in the U.S. film industry who is even more passionate, relentless, and determined: James Cameron.
Schwarzenegger believes James Cameron is “crazier” than he is
The Terminator saga was a turning point in Schwarzenegger’s career, with the first two installments written and directed by James Cameron. The second film, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, was especially successful, catapulting the Austrian-born actor to the peak of his worldwide fame. It was then that Arnold truly understood who James Cameron was:
“There is only one person I have worked with in Hollywood who is crazier than me when it comes to ‘big’ thinking, and that is James Cameron. Jim and I have been friends for almost 40 years. We’ve done three movies together. Two of them, ‘Terminator 2′ and ‘True Lies,’ were the biggest movies ever made when they came out,” the actor wrote in his book Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life.
Schwarzenegger didn’t hold back in praising the Canadian filmmaker:
“He gives his all when he works on his films. That’s the secret to the success of his projects. However, what really sets Jim above the rest of us is his ability to fully dedicate himself to each film. He’s done it again and again,” Arnold said. “In German, we have a saying: Wenn schon, denn schon. Roughly translated, it means, ‘If you’re going to do something, DO IT. Go all out.’ Jim is the embodiment of that saying.”
Up next for James Cameron is Avatar: The Seed Bearer, the third installment of the Avatar saga, slated for release on December 19. The big question remains: will it match the record-breaking box office numbers of its predecessors, at a time when Hollywood blockbusters are bringing in far more modest returns than in the past?
