The Red Sox have been without Alex Bregman after he went on the injured list with a quad strain. However, the superstar is making his way back to the field.
Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million deal in the offseason. He was slashing .299/.385/.553 in 51 games before his injury. At the time, Bregman’s injury was described as “significant” by manager Alex Cora and similar to the quad injury he sustained in 2021 with the Houston Astros. That injury kept him out for over two months.
Bregman, however, is progressing quickly. Cora announced that Bregman began a running progression on Thursday, according to MassLive’s Christopher Smith.
“If it’s up to him, he’ll be playing tonight,” Cora said, according to Smith.
“He’s locked in,” Cora said. “He has his date on his mind. We just have to keep working. Obviously we don’t want to rush and we have to be very diligent with it. But he’s feeling great.”

Getting Bregman may be the spark the Red Sox need. The team is 8-12 in their last 20 games and are currently 9 1/2 games out of the lead in the American League East. They are currently in fourth place, behind the Tampa Bay Rays, Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees. However, they are just 4 1/2 games out of a Wild Card spot.
Getting Bregman back could help the team get back on track. Additionally, the team could soon call up top prospect Roman Anthony. If the Red Sox can stay competitive near the trade deadline, they could add a few pieces and make a late-season push.
