Prosecutors on Tuesday released alleged text messages between suspected Charlie Kirk assassin Tyler Robinson and his romantic partner, which were included in the legal team’s charging documents and hinted at a possible motive.
Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray charged the 22-year-old Robinson with seven total charges, including aggravated murder and two counts of obstruction of justice.Â
The obstruction charges are in connection with him allegedly trying to hide or destroy evidence related to the shooting Wednesday of Kirk at a rally at Utah Valley University, specifically hiding the rifle he allegedly used and destroying the clothes he allegedly wore in the shooting.
The other charges are related to witness tampering, a third-degree felony, which includes telling his roommate and romantic partner to delete incriminating texts and to stay silent when asked questions by police.
The text exchange started with Robinson directing the roommate to look under the keyboard where Robinson allegedly wrote that he saw an opportunity to take out Kirk and did it, to which the roommate asked if Robinson was joking.
“I am still ok my love, but am stuck in Orem for a little while longer yet,” Robinson allegedly responded. “Shouldn’t be long until I can come home but I gotta grab my rifle still. To be honest, I had hoped to keep this secret until the day I died of old age. I am sorry to involve you.”
When the roommate and romantic partner, a male reportedly transitioning to female, asked why Robinson allegedly committed the murder, the suspect responded that he “had enough of [Kirk’s] hatred,” and that “some hate can’t be negotiated out.”Â
Robinson also allegedly told the roommate that he had been planning the attack “for a bit over a week, I think.”Â
Prosecutors said Robinson was charged with aggravated murder for “intentionally or knowingly causing the death of Charlie Kirk, at great risk of death for others.”
He also said the defendant is believed to have targeted Kirk “based on his political expression, knowing children were present, and would witness the homicide.”Â
Robinson has not entered a plea in relation to the shooting so far but will remain jailed without bail at the Utah County jail while the court case plays out.
