Anthony Weiner’s hopes of a political comeback are dashed after losing NYC council race

Disgraced former New York Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner on Tuesday night lost his primary bid for a New York City Council seat in lower Manhattan, dashing his hopes of a political comeback.

State Assembly Member Harvey Epstein won the Democratic primary after ranked choice voting results were tallied. Votes concluded on June 24, but were not finalized or reported until Tuesday, per the Associated Press.

The former congressman, who was a star in Democratic politics before scandals plagued his career in 2011, received less than 3,000 votes in the election.

Weiner had hoped to return to the political arena after nearly 15 years of scandal. The former lawmaker served over a year in prison for sexting an underage girl. His reputation was also tarnished after he allegedly sent lewd photographs and messages to other women while he was married.

The city council election was the Democrat’s second attempt at a political comeback. He also tried to return to politics as the mayor of New York City in 2013.

Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani was also declared the party’s official nominee for New York City mayor, defeating former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New York City Comptroller Brad Lander for the nomination.
