Legendary singer-songwriter Barry Manilow announced Monday that he was recently diagnosed with lung cancer, and told fans that he will need to reschedule some concerts next month to recover from surgery.
The “Copacabana” singer said on Instagram that an MRI scan detected “a cancerous spot” on one of his lungs after he had a lengthy case of bronchitis earlier this year. Manilow went through six weeks of bronchitis earlier this year, followed by a five-week relapse.Â
“Even though I was over the bronchitis and back on stage at Westgate Las Vegas, my wonderful doctor ordered an MRI just to make sure that everything was OK,” Manilow said in the statement. “The MRI discovered a cancerous spot on my left lung that needs to be removed. It’s pure luck (and a great doctor) that it was found so early.”
Manilow said he is still undergoing additional scans to confirm that the cancer has not spread anywhere else, but that if the theory that it was caught early is confirmed, then he will not need chemotherapy or radiation to treat it.Â
The singer, also known for his hit song “Mandy,” said the surgery will take place after his current slate of “A Christmas Gift of Love” concerts are over, and he will need a month to recover from the surgery.Â
The January shows have been rescheduled for February, March and April. His show at Westgate Las Vegas for Valentine’s Day weekend will go on as scheduled.
