Republican New York City mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa on Friday joked that he could join a unity ticket with incumbent Mayor Eric Adams to defeat presumptive Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani if the mayor took the midnight shift.
Sliwa, who ran uncontested for the Republican nomination on Tuesday, lost to Adams in 2021. However, some New Yorkers have pushed for a unity ticket with Adams in November, who is running for reelection as an independent.Ā
The Republican, who has rejected calls to drop out of the race to give Adams more votes to take on Mamdani, answered sarcastically when asked whether he would be interested in merging their campaigns.Ā
āAbsolutely,ā Sliwa told Fox News. āEric, you have been the best nightlife mayor weāve ever had. You party to the break of dawn. You can take over the shift at 12 midnight. Iāll get a little bit of sleep, come back at it at 6, Iāll be the mayor, and you, the swagger man, can be the nightlife mayor. How about that unity?”
Sliwa has also blasted Adams as a “crook” in an interview with Politico, and said he would not even drop out of the race for mayor if the Trump administration offered him a job.
āIf the president were to call, I, very respectfully, would say, āPresident Trump. Iām interested in only one job: being mayor of the city of New York,āā Sliwa said. āIām the Republican nominee. Iām the āprotecting animalsā independent party nominee, and Iām running till November 4, until the vote to figure out who our next mayor is.ā
