The Defense Department on Friday denied a report by The Wall Street Journal that the U.S. will reduce the number of troops it has in South Korea.
The Journal reported on Thursday, “The Trump administration is considering whether to withdraw thousands of American troops from South Korea, a move that could stir new anxiety among allies,” and cited “defense officials familiar with the discussions.”
Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell denied the report in a repost of The Journal’s article on X on Friday.
“Anyone who’s covered the Pentagon knows that we always evaluate force posture. That said, the U. S. remains firmly committed to the [Republic of Korea]. Our alliance is iron clad [sic]. Reports that the DoD will reduce U.S. troops in the Republic of Korea are not true,” Parnell said.
