The Boston Red Sox just swept the New York Yankees in a three-game series. The final game included a home run from Rafael Devers on Father’s Day.
Shortly after, the Red Sox traded Devers away to the San Francisco Giants for a highly-questionable return package of two major leagues and two minor leagues, none of which immediately seems to move the needle.
The biggest thing for the Red Sox appears to be moving off Devers’ contract.
The deal sparked reactions from plenty, including Red Sox legend Jonathan Papelbon and even some current Giants players.
On Sunday night, Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts, who was also traded by Boston, spoke on the move, per Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic.
“I just thought it was crazy. Nothing really to say, it’s just crazy.”
Betts also gave credit to the Giants for what is a massive move.
“I mean, they care, they want to win,” Betts said. “Those guys over there are doing a great job of putting a team together and obviously, they want to win.”
In 2020, the Red Sox traded Betts and David Price in exchange for Alex Verdugo, SS Jeter Downs, C Connor Wong in a head-scratching move, and one that is still scoffed at by Red Sox fans even today.
And, now, the Devers deal will be another puzzling decision as fans wonder what direction this team is going in.
