The Department of Education on Friday released more than $5 billion in school funding that the administration withheld earlier this month, which partly funds after-school activities, summer programs, and classes teaching English as a second language.
The Trump administration announced the pause earlier this month while it reviewed what the money would fund, but released $1 billion of the nearly $7 billion last week. The White House previously argued some of the money was being spent on a “radical leftwing agenda.”
Members of Congress confirmed the disbursement on social media, with former West Virginia governor and current Sen. Jim Justice commenting that the new funds will have a “positive impact” on children in his state.
“[The Department of Education] released the rest of the education funding to the states,” he posted on X. “The release of these funds will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the kids of West Virginia.”
The move comes after the department faced bipartisan push back over its decision to pause the funds, and Democratic-led states sued the administration to demand the funds be released, The Hill reported.
