The Dallas Mavericks shocked the basketball world with the Luka Doncic trade, including some former members of the team.

Over the past few months, the NBA landscape has changed drastically thanks to the Mavericks sending their young superstar to the Los Angeles Lakers. The move not only shocked fans, but it also angered many who support or have any affiliation with the Mavericks.

Among those who were shocked by the deal was former Mavericks general manager Donnie Nelson. As general manager of the team from 2005-21, Nelson not only helped build the 2011 title team, but he also drafted Doncic in 2018.

In a recent interview with Ekipa, Nelson broke down some of his feelings about Doncic’s sudden, unwanted departure.Ā

ā€œBut with all due respect, you have to understand that some players are different, special, and even more important to the environment and the community,ā€ Nelson said. ā€œIt’s important to treat those players with respect. That’s why there was so much disappointment after what happened to Luka. Not just my disappointment, but a universal disappointment.ā€

Nelson’s words are strong, but it’d be hard to find anyone who disagrees with them outside of Nico Harrison. Nelson also went on to say that it was a deal that never would have happened if he were still calling the shots.

Nelson’s words throughout the interview hinged on the community aspect of running a team. He believed that players like Doncic were not only an integral part of what happened on the court but also what happened off the floor.

Considering the response to the trade from Mavericks fans, there is no doubt that Nelson has a point about the importance of players to the community.

In any case, Nelson and others can only criticize the deal and watch as Doncic and the Mavericks continue their journeys on separate paths.
