Squid Game season 3 had the players repeatedly vote whether the games should continue or not. Now that the original series has come to a conclusion, fans of the Netflix show that became a worldwide sensation after it debuted in 2021 would definitely vote for the games to keep going.

While Netflix hasn’t said a word about what the future holds for Squid Game, there are rumors abound about spinoffs, prequels and even a sequel. That’s thanks in large part to showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk himself.

Rumored future Squid Game projects

The rumors about potential shows to continue the Squid Game saga are based on an Entertainment Weekly interview Hwang gave in June in which he said despite being exhausted by working on the series, and losing ten teeth in the process, he’d be open to doing spinoffs or sequels. He even talked about a specific idea that he would like to explore.

Lee Byung-hun, the ‘Front Man’ in Squid Games, said in different interview that he and Hwang have joked about a couple possible ideas since season 1.

And then there is the final scene in the season 3 finale that sent fans into a frenzy that the United States could be the new home for a future sequel. We’ll start there

Squid Games America

Cate Blanchett made a cameo in the last scene of season 3 playing an American recruiter for the games. While Hwang has said he just wanted a strong ending and people shouldn’t read into it, that hasn’t stopped speculation that the Squid Games will be moving to the United States.

Furthermore, Deadline reported last year that sources told the outlet that Netflix was working on an English-language version of the show. Word had it that the streamer called on David Fincher, who directed ‘Fight Club’, to develop it.

Front Man spinoff ideas

There are a couple ideas about potential Squid Games shows featuring the Front Man.

One of those came out of the season 3 finale when the Front Man sees the American recruiter. Hwang told the The Hollywood Reporter that “the Front Man himself, he had heard of the other international games and recruiters being there, but he didn’t know for sure. And so he was actually also shocked to see for himself that there is this recruiter in America as well, and it was by chance that he saw her.”

Screenrant speculated that the Front Man could play a part in the American Squid Game, possibly trying to continue the mission of Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, to take down the games after having a change of heart about them.

Another possibility comes from Lee Byung-hun himself. He told The Hollywood Reporter during an interview that since season 1 he has joked with Hwang about delving into the story of the masked man who oversees the games in Korea. He also said that they discussed another potential spinoff doing the same with the Recruiter.

Hwang’s idea for an interquel spinoff

Squid Game’s creator told Entertainment Weekly about an idea that he had for a spinoff that would take place between season 1 and season 2. “I actually had this faint ideation about possibly a spinoff — not a sequel, but maybe a spinoff about the three-year gap between season 1 and season 2 when Gi-hun looks around for the recruiters,” Hwang told the outlet.

He explained that the show would not be about the games, but instead look at what the different characters’ lives were like outside the arena during that time including the recruiters, officers, masked men and Captain Park, played by Oh Dal-su.
