It’s very rare for something to happen in baseball that has never happened before.
There’s a chance this has never happened before.
San Francisco Giants relief pitcher Ryan Walker was on the mound in Chicago. The White Sox had second and third in the seventh inning.
It was 3-2 Chicago on the scoreboard, but Walker had an 0-2 count and two outs with a chance to get out of the inning.
Then, as Walker began to stride toward home plate, disaster struck.
He appeared to lose the grip on his back foot and slip forward. When that happened, Walker’s plant foot angled funny.
In the end, he chose not to throw the ball at all, instead pump-faking a pitch.
That was an automatic balk, and thus a run for the White Sox, who went on to win the game.

It’s really hard to figure out how that can even happen, but it clearly did.
Walker probably should’ve found a way to throw home anyway, but if it got away, it would’ve resulted in a run coming in, as well.
Maybe it was a lose-lose situation once Walker slipped. But man, that’s a new one.
