The San Francisco Giants made the win-now acquisition of the year by landing franchise slugger Rafael Devers from the Boston Red Sox.

The baseball world was shocked to learn that the Red Sox were willing to relinquish Devers, who is a perennial top-10 hitter in the sport. As a result, the Giants have answered their biggest roster question as they sit fewer than three games back from the Los Angeles Dodgers for the lead in the National League West division.

The Red Sox evidently felt Devers was no longer a fit for their roster as he refused to fill in at first base for the team. And the Giants could face a similar dilemma if Devers remains in a designated hitter role.

To build on their efforts toward a World Series championship, the Giants could consider a trade proposal from Bailey Bassett of ClutchPoints, who suggested the team deal prospect Bryce Eldrige to the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for first baseman Josh Naylor and prospect LuJames Groover.

“The Devers trade was a step in the right direction for a Giants team that is 41-31, but it also forced the team into going all in, so San Francisco should continue adding talent to the major league roster,” Bassett explained. “Inner divisional trades are somewhat rare, but Naylor is one of many Diamondbacks players who could be moved ahead of the trade deadline this year. Arizona has a talented roster, but an even more talented division has forced them out of the playoff picture and into potential seller status.”

The fit between the Giants and Naylor is clear enough. After slugging 31 homers in his All-Star campaign last year, he has emerged as one of the most productive first basemen in the majors and would be a clear upgrade over Dominic Smith for the Giants.

Naylor also seems likely to be on the move if the Diamondbacks end up selling, as he’s on a one-year contract before potentially reaching free agency. Spotrac projects that Naylor is in line for a five-year, $100 million contract moving forward.

But Eldridge is a highly-coveted prospect, so if the Giants are going to trade him for what could end up being a one-year rental, they would have to feel strongly that this season offers a definitive championship opportunity.
