Comedian Craig Robinson, aka Darryl Philbin in “The Office,” is used to cracking jokes for a living, although that will soon be a thing of the past after he cryptically announced a career change.

Robinson’s cryptic career change announcement

“Just wanted you to hear it from me. I am quitting comedy,” Robinson revealed in a short Instagram reel. “But not for nothing. It’s been an amazing run and y’all have been amazing and wonderful, but I’m following something bigger. Thank you so much. I love you and stay tuned.”

Given his profession for the best part of 25 years, we should perhaps know better than to take him too seriously. Certainly, many fans weren’t falling for it on social media.

Initially, Robinson didn’t give any clues as to what that “something bigger” was, although a second follow-up video the next day did at least offer a little insight into what his future plans might involve.

“Turns out having a dream and building a business with your friends are two VERY different things. I can’t go into detail just yet, but for real though, any help would be huge.”

“The Office” breakthrough and critical acclaim

After brief appearances in popular sitcoms such as “Friends” and “The Bernie Mac Show,” Robinson’s big breakthrough came when he was cast as warehouse foreman Philbin in “The Office,” whose cast was nominated for five Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

Since his last outing in the mockumentary in 2013, Robinson has been involved in a number of different projects as an actor, voice actor and comedian, including “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “American Dad,” “The Masked Singer,” and “SpongeBob SquarePants”.

However, his most critically acclaimed piece of work has been his hosting of “Harlem Globetrotters: Play It Forward,” for which he was nominated for a 2024 Daytime Emmy Award.
