Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games alongside his brother Sam Houser and others, has been a driving creative force behind the Grand Theft Auto franchise since its early days with GTA: London.
His writing shaped iconic titles like Grand Theft Auto V, Red Dead Redemption, Red Dead Redemption 2, Bully, and Max Payne 3. But in a recent interview with IGN, Houser revealed that he had no involvement in the story or characters of the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI.
Houser officially left Rockstar Games in 2020, so it’s not surprising that his fingerprints aren’t on GTA VI. Still, fans had speculated that some of his earlier work might have made its way into the game’s development. Houser put those rumors to rest.

Houser, convinced that the game is going to be great
“I feel incredibly privileged to have worked on something so massive,” Houser said, reflecting on his legacy with the GTA series. “I wrote the last ten or eleven games, so I think the world’s had enough GTAs from me. There’s always a new story to tell, but this time, there won’t be any narrative or characters I created. I think it’s going to be exciting—and the game’s going to be great.”
GTA VI is currently in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S, with a release date set for May 26 at 12:00 a.m. EST—assuming there are no last-minute delays. For now, Rockstar’s official stance is that they’re on track to hit that launch window.
