Hollywood icon Halle Berry turned 59 years old this week, marking the occasion with a trip with boyfriend Van Hunt. She posted photos from the vacation on Instagram, and included what appeared to be a subtle dig at ex-husband David Justice.
Berry shared photos of the trip – relaxing by the ocean, alongside a birthday cake – alongside the caption: “Phew…! cooking, cleaning and mothering“
That caption seemed to reference comments made by Justice during a recent podcast appearance. Speaking to ‘All the Smoke’ podcast with former NBA star Matt Barnes, Justice spoke about his four-year marriage to Berry in the 1990s.
“My knowledge and my understanding, my wisdom around relationships just wasn’t vast,” Justice said. “So, I’m looking at my mom — and I’m a Midwest guy. So, in my mind, I’m thinking a wife at that time should cook, clean, [be] traditional, you know?”
“Then I’m thinking, ‘OK, if we have kids, is this the woman I want to have kids with and build a family with?’ At that time, as a young guy—she don’t cook, don’t clean, don’t really seem like motherly, and then we start having issues,” he continued.
Berry gave her own take on the situation earlier this year when she appeared on The Drew Barrymore Show. She referenced criticism that she has faced in the past for her relationships, but insisted that she had no regrets.
“It’s hard in these streets. I’ve heard people say, ‘Something must be wrong with Halle Berry, she can’t keep a man.’ Who’s to say I want to keep a man?” Berry said.
“I don’t want to keep the wrong man. Like, I’m not crazy, right? So when you find that you make a mistake—we all make mistakes. We have a right to say, ‘Oh God, this was a mistake. Let me start again.’ We have the right to do that.”
