Due out in U.S. theaters this week, Freakier Friday sees Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan reprise their roles as Tess and Anna Coleman, the mother-and-daughter duo at the heart of 2003’s hit comedy Freaky Friday.

Based on Mary Rodgers’ 1972 novel of the same name, Freaky Friday revolved around the chaotic hilarity that ensued when a magic fortune cookie caused a body swap between Tess, a widowed mother, and Anna, her troubled teenage daughter.

“Lightning might indeed strike twice”

Now, 22 years on, the Freaky Friday franchise returns to the big screen with a sequel in which Anna is herself the mother of an adolescent girl – Harper, played by Julia Butters.

What’s more, Anna is about to inherit a stepdaughter through her forthcoming marriage to single father Eric Davies (Manny Jacinto). And Eric’s daughter, Lily (Sophia Hammons), just so happens to be Harper’s high-school enemy.

“As they navigate the myriad challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover that lightning might indeed strike twice,” says Walt Disney Studios, the distributor behind both Freaky Friday and Freakier Friday.

When is Freakier Friday released in the U.S.?

Directed by Nisha Ganatra, Freakier Friday is scheduled for release in U.S. movie theaters on Friday, August 8. This comes two weeks after the picture had its worldwide premiere at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
