The House of Representatives will not extend President Donald Trump’s takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) in Washington, D.C., which he did with a 30-day emergency order that expires next week, according to a report.
House Speaker Mike Johnson said Thursday that D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowserâs announcement this week that she would coordinate with federal law enforcement on an indefinite basis from now on seemingly âresolved some ofâ the issues, POLITICO reported. Three unnamed sources told the outlet that House leaders do not plan to hold a vote to extend Trump’s order.
Trump’s order will expire on Wednesday without congressional action.
Senate Democrats have said that they would block the bill to extend the order using the filibuster. The Senate Republicans are also not expected to give an extension a vote.
Bowser called for the end of the police takeover on Wednesday.
âI want the message to be clear to the Congress: We have a framework to request or use federal resources in our city,â Bowser said. âWe donât need a presidential emergency.â
