Hurricane Melissa makes landfall in Jamaica as Category 5 storm

Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica on Tuesday as a Category 5 storm with 185 mph winds, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The hurricane made landfall around 1 p.m. ET Tuesday near New Hope, Jamaica, CNN reported. Hurricane Melissa is the strongest storm on record to hit Jamaica, and is one of the strongest hurricanes on record to make landfall in the Atlantic basin.

Melissa marks the strongest storm to hit the region since Hurricane Dorian in 2019, which had winds of 185 mph when it hit the Bahamas’ Abaco Islands.
