During the first few months of his second term in the White House, President Donald Trump has sought to enact his agenda at break-neck speed.
He has threatened, imposed and revoked a dizzying number of economic tariffs. His effort to crack down on illegal immigration has led to controversial ICE raids and subsequent protests. There have been calls to arrest former President Barack Obama, to invade Greenland and, most recently, struggles to distance himself from child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
That relentless news cycle is too much for legendary film director James Cameron, who created ‘Titanic’ and ‘Avatar’. Speaking earlier this year he revealed that he is so unhappy with the turn that America has taken that he’s leaving the county and is set to become a citizen of New Zealand.
“I think it’s horrific, I think it’s horrifying,” Cameron told New Zealand magazine Stuff, when asked about Trump’s return to office.

“I see a turn away from everything decent. America doesn’t stand for anything if it doesn’t stand for what it has historically stood for. It becomes a hollow idea, and I think they’re hollowing it out as fast as they can for their own benefit.”
Cameron is Canadian and lived in Ontario until his family moved to California at the age of 17. He bought a home and farm in New Zealand 2012, after filming Avatar. The Guardian reports that his New Zealand citizenship is now “imminent”.
“I don’t know if I feel any safer here, but I certainly feel like I don’t have to read about it on the front page every single day. And it’s just sickening,” Cameron explained.
“There’s something nice about the New Zealand outlets – at least they’ll put it on page three. I just don’t want to see that guy’s face any more on the front page of the paper. It’s inescapable there, it’s like watching a car crash over and over and over.”
