Jane Fonda and Robert Redford were once one of Hollywood’s most iconic on-screen couples. Their chemistry lit up the silver screen in classics like “The Chase,” “Barefoot in the Park,” “The Electric Horseman,” and, more recently, the 2017 Netflix film “Our Souls at Night”. To audiences, they seemed like the perfect pairing – timeless, romantic, and effortlessly in sync.

But according to Fonda, what viewers saw on screen didn’t reflect their reality behind the scenes.

“Cold” Redford’s “problem with women

In a candid reflection, the two-time Oscar winner revealed that working with Redford wasn’t always easy. Despite their cinematic connection, Redford was distant off camera – and often cold toward her. For years, Fonda blamed herself for the tension between them.

He has a problem with women,” she once admitted. “He was always in a bad mood and didn’t like kissing. I used to think it was my fault, but I never brought it up with him. He’s a good person, he just has a problem with women.”

Still, even with the emotional distance, Fonda confessed that she once fell in love with Redford.

Meryl Streep‘s feelings towards Robert Redford

She wasn’t the only one captivated by the Hollywood legend. Meryl Streep, another icon of American cinema, also admitted to being smitten by Redford during their time filming the 1985 epic “Out of Africa”.

It didn’t take long for Streep to feel a spark – just five takes, by her count. She recalled one particular scene that left a lasting impression: the moment Redford’s character washes her hair in the African wilderness.

“It was magical,” she said. “We see so many sex scenes in movies, but rarely something with that kind of tenderness and intimacy. I never wanted it to end – even though we were surrounded by hippos.”

Both women’s stories reflect the enduring mystique – and complexity – of one of Hollywood’s most admired leading men, whose presence left a deep mark on and off screen.
