It’s sold as “the show with hot questions and even hotter wings,” and it’s fair to say that the Hot Ones series of the First We Feast podcast tests some famous palates. This time around, Sean Evans interviews Golden Globe– and Emmy Award–winning actor Jeremy Allen White, and the sweat beads were showing…
Springsteen song with a punch
White, who is playing Bruce in the new release ‘Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere’, explains why the iconic ‘Born in the U.S.A.’ floors even the pros, given that it isn’t sung so much as projected. With no formal vocal training, he pushed from his chest and throat – “not breathing properly from my stomach” – and wound up with a blinding migraine, drenched in sweat (without the need for the wings) and temporarily voiceless after an afternoon of takes.
Soon after this incident, the actor bumped into The Boss at a party and told him about it. Springsteen laughed, saying, “That sounds about right.” The exchange, White says, underlined how staggering it is that Springsteen, now in his mid 70s, still belts out that song – plus maybe 20 more – night after night on stage.

The importance of Nebraska
While tucking into the sauce-covered food, White talked eloquently about the intimacy around Scott Cooper’s movie, where the storytelling takes over. “It’s just Bruce and a guitar,” he says. And that seems to have been part of the attraction to the role.
His other roles too have provided their own challenges, whether prepping for wrestling in The Iron Claw or getting to grip swith the knife work to be a credible Michelin star chef in The Bear. But as he says, mastery starts with humility. And a skill he worked out during this interview with Evans was the increased need to focus on the questions as the Scoville number ticked slowly upwards.
