A federal judge on Tuesday rejected Gov. Gavin Newsom’s, D-Calif., bid to limit the law enforcement activities of the National Guardsmen in Los Angeles to the immediate areas around federal buildings.

Senior US District Judge Charles R. Breyer scheduled a hearing for Thursday, but declined to immediately limit the National Guard’s activities. Instead, he sought arguments from both the state and Department of Justice, CNN reported.

Both parties have until 1:30 p.m. on Thursday to submit their arguments. The judge made no comments on the merits of the case.
