The nominations for the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards have been confirmed, with Apple TV+ workplace drama “Severance” leading the way with a remarkable 27 nods, just ahead of satirical cringe comedy “The Studio” and black comedy drama “The White Lotus” (both 23).

The Super Bowl and Kendrick Lamar nominated

Perhaps one of the most eye-catching nominees, however, is Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show, which is in contention to win Emmys in four categories:

  • Outstanding Variety Special (Live)
  • Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special
  • Outstanding Music Direction
  • Outstanding Choreography (Variety/Reality)

Kendrick Lamar’s record-breaking Super Bowl Halftime Show

The show, which was produced by Apple Music and presented by Roc Nation and Jesse Collins Entertainment, featured guest appearances from SZA, Samuel L. Jackson, Mustard, and Serena Williams, and will be remembered for Lamar’s controversial diss track “Not Like Us,” aimed at fellow rapper Drake.

The combination of stardust and celebrity beef certainly had an effect, with more people – 133.5 million – tuning into Lamar’s performance than any other previous edition of the Halftime Show.

Lamar part of Super Bowl’s only Emmy victories

However, Lamar can’t achieve anything that both he and the Super Bowl Halftime Show haven’t achieved before. In fact, the 38-year-old was part of the first Halftime Show to win Primetime Emmys for Outstanding Variety Special (Live), Outstanding Music Direction and Outstanding Production Design for a Variety Special (now all technically part of the Creative Arts Emmys) in 2022.

At Super Bowl LVI, Lamar teamed up with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Eminem and 50 Cent in the first such show centered entirely around hip-hop music.

When is the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony?

The Primetime Emmy ceremony, hosted by Nate Bargatze, will take place on September 14 in Los Angeles. Creative Arts winners, including those for Lamar’s categories, will be revealed on September 6 and 7.
