The Mets came out of the gates hot, as they were one of the best teams in the league over the first month of the season. That was even as Juan Soto was still settling into his new team, giving New York optimism that the club could be even better.

However, as Soto has started performing at his best, the rest of the team has not done its part. New York has especially struggled recently, having lost 12 of its past 15 games to fall into second place in the NL East.

That stretch of losses came to a head on Saturday when the Mets fell 9-2 to the Pirates to lose the series in Pittsburgh. Afterward, the team held a players-only meeting as it searches for answers for the rest of the season.

Here’s what happened.

Mets players-only meeting

After their most recent loss, a 9-2 blowout against the Pirates, the Mets held a players-only meeting in the locker room. Outfielder Brandon Nimmo explained that now was the time to make sure everyone was sticking together moving forward.

“We’re not playing well,” Nimmo said. “Just put things out there, talk about it as a team, and move on. It just felt like we weren’t really putting it together.”

Other team leaders spoke with the media about the meeting, including Francisco Lindor, who recalled a similar meeting last season. The shortstop explained that the discussion just came together after the loss on Saturday.

“After the game, we all sat here and it just happened,” Lindor said. “Collectively, as a group, we decided to start talking. That’s what good teams do.”
