The New York Mets are currently 46-34 and sit one-and-a-half games behind the Philadelphia Phillies for first place in the National League East.

The Mets were in first place for a while before going 1-9 over their last 10 games.

New York’s pitching staff is one of the best, if not the best in Major League Baseball. The offense, headlined by star Juan Soto, has been cold recently.

One position that could use an upgrade ahead of the trade deadline is third base.

Manned by Brett Baty and the injured Mark Vientos, third base has easily been the worst position for the Mets. Vientos has been dealing with a right hamstring strain since June 2.

Baty and Vientos have combined for 14 home runs and 47 RBI but have slashed just .224/.282/.390.

Bailey Bassett of ClutchPoints devised a trade proposal that has the Mets acquiring a two-time All-Star/World Series champion from the Boston Red Sox.

The Mets would acquire star third baseman Alex Bregman in exchange for Brandon Sproat (MLB No. 61), Drew Gilbert (Mets No. 9) and Jacob Reimer (Mets No. 17).

“Bregman is a two-time All-Star and one of the best third basemen in baseball. He’d provide more star power in New York’s big market, which is a place he could thrive, considering his experience playing under the bright lights,” wrote Bassett. “Bregman is dealing with an injury issue in his own right, but he is also close to returning. Bregman’s presence would likely slot Vientos into a full-time designated hitter role.”

Sproat, 24, is one of the top pitching prospects from the 2023 draft class. He has struggled in Triple-A Syracuse this season but has a lot of potential.

Sproat is 3-5 with a 5.95 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP in 15 starts.

Gilbert, 24, was the 28th overall pick by the Houston Astros in 2022. The centerfielder was one of the best players in the country at Tennessee. He is hitting .238 with six home runs and 32 RBI in 62 games.

Reimer, 21, is a third baseman prospect in Double-A Binghamton. He is slashing .280/.382/.496 with eight home runs and 39 RBI in 62 games.
