Mets trade for Orioles veteran would ‘rescue’ rotation after Griffin Canning news

The New York Mets’ starting rotation suffered a major blow on Thursday night when Griffin Canning suffered a season-ending Achilles injury. Their rotation has the best ERA in baseball, but the group is extremely short-handed right now.

Kodai Senga, Sean Manaea, Griffin Canning and Tylor Megill are all now injured. The Mets are in a tight race with the Philadelphia Phillies, and they may need to make a trade to save the rotation. FanSided’s Christopher Kline suggested the Mets trade for Charlie Morton to “rescue” their rotation after losing Canning.

“Morton isn’t a shutdown ace, but he can fill Canning’s slot in the middle of the rotation and give a patchwork Mets rotation more of an identity,” wrote Kline. “New York should be plenty familiar with what Morton brings to the table after facing him countless times in a Braves uniform. Deploying Morton to stretch their lead in the NL East would be something like poetry.”

Morton signed a one-year, $15 million deal with the Orioles in the offseason. However, he had a 10.89 ERA in his first five starts and was moved to the bullpen. However, since May 26, he has been a part of the rotation again and has looked like a different pitcher. He has a 2.90 ERA in six starts since May 26.

The Orioles are poised to be sellers at the trade deadline. They may not start dumping their young stars, but a player like Morton would be an ideal trade candidate. He is in his 18th season and will be a free agent at the end of the year anyway.

Morton would be a huge asset to the Mets. Megill, Manaea and Senga should all return this year, but having a steady arm like Morton in the rotation in the meantime could be huge.
